Twaalfakker Truffle Season

Cold and wet is perfect for "truffling" in the Kalahari compound. No, they aren't the French and Italian versions, but they are associated with young oak trees, they are some sort of fungi and they are normally found just below the grass top at the root.

They are pinkish in color and if you break them open they have a milkly ooze that comes out to coat the "wound". Raw - they taste nutty....but sliced and saute with butter they are the manna of the Gods! Very rich and delicious!

Here's Sizzle....she's the best of my dogs for finding them for ME. All I have to say is "Find me one" and she starts working that nose and will indicate where one is so I can get it. Diva, on the other hand, will not share and scarfs down any she finds at warp speed.

Here's the group all searching for truffles for themselves. The season is short for the best ones...usually December and January are best.

About This Blog

Originally, this was a place to tell you my news. Then I got a new camera and it became a way to see how we live here at Kalahari Rhodesian Ridgebacks - the fun things, the everyday things and even the humdrum things.

It's just home. I'm glad you stopped by and come again!
