From Terry Matthews...Here's the latest update on the Kemah Kalahari Klan.
Your fur kids were a wonderful credit to you this weekend! We went to TVRRCOT lure coursing trial in Cleburne, Texas, over the weekend. The Little Spitfire drew applause from bystanders her first JC run. When she took off, it was like lightning chasing a laser . . . dead on the lure at full speed, baying. Ian, the judge, turned and said to me, 'By God, you have a field champion'.
We stayed through the fun runs Saturday afternoon. I just wanted to see if Theo would run one last time before I gave up on him as a courser. Ian released Scout and I held Theo back until she got a nice head start. It was almost a replay of last year when he pulled my legs out from under me when he broke free. He put on the afterburners and caught up. I held my breath to see if he would foul her like he has Oslo. Not. The joy of running took over and he stayed on the lure. His cornering was wide because his stride is so long, but he made up for it in speed and actually finished first, on the lure. For that run, he earned his ASFA certification, and he retired to socialize for the rest of the weekend.
Sunday morning was a repeat of Saturday's JC run. JC earned. By now a lot of people were watching. Caught up in the moment, I entered the open competition. After the first run she was in second place behind a big Juba Lee dog. When the results of the second run were posted, she had won for a 5 point major. With lots of class . . . when the lure stops, she stops and comes to me. None of this shredding the plastic bag stuff and running away. If it's not moving, it's not of interest.
Both dogs received lots of complements on their even temperaments. We sat under a tree on a mound where there was a breeze. I put the kids on down stays and read while they watched everything, totally laid back.
** A Junior Courser title and a 5 point major - not a bad weekend at all! Read more about AKC Lure Coursing here.
